This machine was invented to draw ellipses, but other than that it’s kind of useless. Unless you find its movement satisfying-to-watch, then it’s the best thing in the world. It is called the trammel of Archimedes, however there is no evidence that the mechanism is actually somehow related to the legendary Greek scholar. It also has quite a few nicknames, and the most popular ones are ‘nothing grinder’, ‘do nothing machine’, and ‘bs maker’.
