One thing I love about the growth of our business is that we have more space in our life to support charities we care about.
I hate saying that it’s only a reality for us now, but when you’re facing your own money struggles it’s hard to think about supporting charities financially, even though you really should.
It’s one of the best ways you can tap into that stream of abundance, as you are operating from a giving place.
But, as I said, I know it’s hard. So if you are in that place, don’t stress about it, just do the best you can.
There are three basic ways you can support charities:
- Donate your time
- Donate your money
- Share their work and mission
Volunteering is a great way for travelers to give back AND see the world. You can read more about that on this post and if you have kids, you might be interested in this post – Why you should volunteer with your kids.
In the past we have supported Wildlife for Warriors in small amounts when I could and volunteered my time to a homeless charity when we lived in the States. One of the best ways you can help make the world a better place is by simply being kind to others.
We are so grateful for your support and readership, so we wanted to share some of the charities we support in the background of what we do.
So thank you for your support of our website in any form, whether it’s purchasing products from us or using our affiliate links to our preferred partners, or supporting our sponsors and the posts we share about them.
That means we’re able to pay that forward in other ways by supporting charities.
I have a huge intention this year to increase that and I’m happy to say it’s going to plan. There is so much more I want to do and now I’m having a bit of rest time I can think of more things.
Charities we support
Pencils of Promise
What a fantastic organization this is. We partnered with Jason and Travis with their Paradise Pack a few months ago. Pencils of Promise was their charity partner and we donated an extra 10% of our commission back to Pencils of Promise as well. I’m also setting up a regular monthly donation.
As a previous teacher, I believe in the power of education – even though I think the system needs some revamping. There are many children around the world who delight in learning, yet don’t have the privilege. It’s up to us help give them the means to do that.
Sea Shepherd
I love the work Sea Shepherd does to help the wildlife in our oceans.
They are really effective. The girls and I were happy to buy these funky shirts at our local farmer’s market. And we’re checking out further ways we can support their important sea-faring missions.
World Vision
World Vision was the first charity I supported as a young girl participating in their 40 hour Famine.
We recently donated for the Nepal Earthquake catastrophe and are currently researching into how we can make more regular contributions to help children facing food shortages.
They also have a blog ambassador program that I want to be a part of. Hoping they’ll respond to my email!
One Girl
You may remember that time Craig wore a school dress in an effort to raise funds to help send girls to school in Sierra Leone in Africa. One Girl is a fantastic non-profit organisation started by a fellow Aussie that gives women and girls access to education.
A girl born in Sierra Leone is more likely to be raped than to go to high school and without an education, a girl will struggle to earn a living and take care of her family.
Just $300 gives a girl in Sierra Leone access to education. So far One Girl have raised $37,500 which means 125 girls are getting educated. And we raised $820 that day, which was almost enough to put 3 girls in school.
We plan to support this initiative again in the future.
Smaller fundraising work through personal friends
My beautiful friend, Nikki, makes jewellery in her spare time. It’s not a business for her, but a way to raise money for important causes. She’s been busy making jewellery for those in Nepal and I’ve been happy adding to my jewellery collection and helping her to raise those much needed funds.
My other friends Mike and Ang opened up a fundraising project for a village in Nepal. It was exciting to see they raised enough too.
Other charities I want to support
- Kiva – an organisation that connects people through lending to alleviate poverty. You can loan a future entrepreneur as little as $25 to help them start their own business.
- Aboriginal charities – I have no idea what is out there, but I want to find some good Australian charities that support the Aboriginal culture.
Helping Australian small business and towns
As I mentioned in this post, one of my big dreams has been to have my own foundation or charity that supports those who are affected by natural disasters.
It’s one of the only things in life we can’t control and I feel for those affected by them.
That’s why, even though we were over our road trip and just wanted to finish, we agreed to partner with Tourism Queensland to visit Longreach who had been going through a severe three year drought hurting the farmers and small businesses, and the Yeppoon/Great Keppel Island region which had been hit by a cyclone.
I realised I don’t necessarily need the big foundation, I’m in a position now to help through what we share on the blog. Because of that we were able to show that these areas are open for tourism despite recovering from a cyclone and a drought.
So we want to continue to use our blog anyway we can as a space to allow those small businesses within Australia to be exposed and shared.
I’ve really felt a deep connection to that this past year as being a very important part of what we do.
It’s not just about our lifestyle, or helping you travel more, it’s also about helping other small businesses have their messages heard.
