Hayao Miyazaki Cancels Retirement For One Final Film

If you’re a fan of Hayao Miyazaki, you’ll be happy to hear that the legendary animator is stepping out of retirement for one last film. That is if Studio Ghibli, the studio that he co-founded, will want him back, of course.

Since Miyazaki announced his retirement 3 years ago, he has been working on Kemushi no Boro (Boro the Caterpillar) – a CG short for the Ghibli Museum.

Miyazaki has been working on the story for two decades and describes it as “a story of a tiny, hairy caterpillar, so tiny that it may be easily squished between your fingers.” According to a NHK television special, Miyazaki was not happy with how the short turned out and proposed to extend it into a feature. Miyazaki is hoping the feature-length version will be done within five years, which means he could be 80 years old by then. If he sticks to his ideal timetable, the film would be finished before the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo – simply perfect timing!
